Southampton 1 Swansea City 0: Charlie Austin off the bench to net winner but Swans’ Lukasz Fabianski also made his mark
TWO-goal Euro hero Charlie Austin came off the bench to spark Southampton into life.
Fresh from his double salvo against Sparta Prague in the Europa League, the former Burnley and QPR hotshot put the Saints ahead in the 64th minute.
Austin fired home a fiercesome right-footer into the top right hand corner of Lukazs Fabianksi's net to put struggling Swansea on the back foot.
Two minutes earlier Austin had hit the bar with another cracking drive after being set up by Nathan Redmond.
Ki Sung-Yueng, Fernando Llorente, Leroy Fer and Gylfi Sigurdsson hit half-hearted efforts that were either blocked or went wide as the home ruled the roost.
In the first half Fabianksi saved Virgil van Dijk's header and then thwarted Dusan Tadic when the midfielder tested him with a long range drive.
Nathan Redmond and Oriol Romeu also went close, while Pierre-Emile Højbjerg had a 63rd minute corker blocked.
As Swansea did their best to mount a fightback Modou Barrow tested Fraser Forsyth in the 71st minute before Sigurdsson was wide of the mark.
