MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to sign a new midfielder in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho is already on the hunt for reinforcements following last weekend’s derby defeat to Manchester City, and is said to have lined up two top targets.

Italian outlet claims Sporting Lisbon ace William Carvalho leads the way, with Juventus youngster Grigoris Kastanos also on Mourinho’s radar.

United scouted Carvalho earlier this year before moving to re-sign Paul Pogba in a world record deal.

The anchorman played a key role in Portugal’s Euro 2016 triumph and was the subject of a cheeky £21million bid from West Brom on deadline day.

But Sporting are holding out for a higher fee, and United could be tempted to make a move as Mourinho considers switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3.

The report adds the Red Devils are also considering Juventus teenager Kastanos, who is valued at £17m by the Italian champs.

The Cyprus international is held in high regard at Juve after fighting his way up through the youth teams, but United would face stiff competition for his signature.

Everton are allegedly keen on making a move, and Ronald Koeman is confident he can land the ace with the offer of guaranteed first-team football.
