Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Man Utd training flanked by bodyguards with future in doubt after missing Man City drubbing

CRISTIANO RONALDO has returned to training after missing the Manchester Derby.

The 37-year-old is understood to have flown out to Portugal after being dropped for the clash with fierce rivals Manchester City - which United lost 4-1.

Manager Ralf Rangnick later said that he was missing the match due to a problem with his hip flexor.

He stated: "Cristiano had some problems with his hip flexor on Friday and since then didn't play."

Now Ronaldo has come back to Man Utd's Carrington training ground ahead of a crunch clash against Tottenham at the weekend.

He was pictured arriving and following behind him were his security team.

But Ronaldo's future has been thrown into question after missing Sunday's derby.

Club legend Roy Keane questioned the injury claims before kick-off, when he said: "I don't like it when the manager talks about this 'hip flexor' - I don't get it.

"We talk about Ronaldo being a machine, very rarely injured then every now and again he comes out with 'hip flexor'.

"It doesn't add up to me."

Rangnick has previously explained all the players do their rehabilitation in Manchester rather than abroad if they are injured - bringing into focus Ronaldo's flight to Portugal.

And his team-mates were left shocked when he did not turn up for Saturday’s club meal.

The former Real Madrid and Juventus forward has netted 15 times in 30 games for United so far this season.

But just one goal in his last 10 matches in all competitions has led some to question his role in the team.

Speaking about his impact on the United side, former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton said:  "Re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't make Manchester United title contenders."

And Ronaldo is not the only United player whose future has been the subject of much speculation following the derby day defeat.

On Monday, reports circulated about Marcus Rashford considering his position at the club.

The England international has started just two of United's last 11 Prem matches under Rangnick.

And he failed to make any sort of impact off the bench at the weekend.
