It was thought he would be set for a move to the US at the end of the previous campaign as his impact on the pitch appeared to be fading.

However, important goals towards the end of the season which helped the club seal Champions League qualification and the club’s chiefs reneged and offered him a new one-year deal.

But, an assist and goal in the weekend’s clash with Sampdoria which turned defeat into victory could see his stay be extended still.

Recent stats show Totti is more effective than two of his stellar Serie A peers.

The 2006 World Cup-winner has scored five goals in his last seven games but has only played 166 minutes — and that equates to one every 33 minutes.

While, though Gonzalo Higuain has scored nine times in the same period, his goal ratio works out at one every 53 minutes, as he has been on the pitch for 473 minutes.

And Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi has four in 593 minutes during the same period.
