And Inter held onto their slim advantage until 15 minutes from time as they looked set to move six points clear at the top of the table.

But then up stepped former Arsenal and Chelsea man Giroud - who was starting instead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 35-year-old Frenchman equalised in the 75th minute, turning in Brahim Diaz's low cross-shot.

And the striker was not done yet as three minutes later he would go on to produce the .

Giroud was played in by Davide Calabria inside the box and immediately performed a remarkably skilful Cruyff-turn before curling a shot through the fingertips of Inter keeper Samir Handanovic.

The brace proved enough to seal victory for AC Milan, despite them ending the game with 10 men after Theo Hernandez was dismissed in stoppage time.

The win moves Stefano Pioli's men within just one point of league leaders Inter, although the champions do have a game in hand.

Speaking after the match, Giroud said: “I was a bit frustrated in the first half, like the whole team, because we didn’t play well and we knew that.

“After the break we showed a great team spirit. We are back!

"The road is still long. We are in the race, but there are a lot of games left to play and Inter remain on top.“

AC Milan have not won the Serie A title since 2011.

Meanwhile, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi was left feeling aggrieved after his side spurned their lead late on.

“It’s normal to be disappointed, we all know how important the derby is,” he said.

“We lost undeservedly but that is football.

"We need to analyse it calmly and see where we were lacking, because objectively speaking, we gave away practically nothing up to the first goal.“
