But the upcoming, mouth-watering encounter between Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City doesn’t seem to be having any ill effects on the players.

Close friends David De Gea and Ander Herrera were snapped larking around in Altrincham on Thursday, with both Spaniards looking completely at ease despite the prospect of facing their arch-rivals this weekend.

Barring injury, De Gea is a certainty to start for the Red Devils at Old Trafford – but Herrera is likely to miss out due to the arrival of Paul Pogba.

The pair are known to be thicker than thieves, with Herrera recently poking fun at De Gea’s atrocious taste in music.

He said: “He likes to play very old music from Spain. Sometimes I tell him that he looks like my grandad.”

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw is still getting to grips with his expensive Range Rover as he prepares to take his driving test.

The left-back is an injury doubt for Saturday but still made time to take his car for a spin – albeit with L Plates on.

Shaw was accompanied by a friend as he jumped behind the wheel of the posh motor, and will be hoping he also has a smooth ride to recovery in time for the derby.
