Liverpool transfer news: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to blow £10m on Leicester’s Ben Chilwell

KOP boss reportedly did not want to be known as a soft touch in the transfer market

LEICESTER’s Ben Chilwell could have been wearing the red of Liverpool this weekend if Kop boss Jurgen Klopp had been willing to pay up the £10million fee.

The highly-rated Foxes full-back was one of several left-backs linked with a move to Anfield this summer.

Midfielder James Milner has been deployed in the position following Albert Moreno’s poor form and due to the lack of a new arrival.

Klopp, however, could have called upon England Under-21s international Chilwell had he not refused to pay over the odds for the 19-year-old, according to reports.

The Foxes youngster, who had a spell on loan at Championship side Huddersfield last season, has yet to appear in the Premier League for Claudio Ranieri’s side.

And that lack of top-flight experience put off the German coach after he contemplated the long-term effects of his short-term problem.

It is claimed that Klopp’s decision not to splash the cash, despite Liverpool receiving a record fee from the latest Premier League TV deal, was because he did not want to seen as a boss who would easily pay excessively for players.

According to Joe.co.uk, Klopp feels there is no turning back in the transfer market as soon as a move is made to pay a relative big sum.

Despite these claims, Klopp did splash out over £50m to sign Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane this summer.

Liverpool welcome Chilwell and his Leicester team-mates to Anfield on Saturday.
