The £30,000-a-week midfielder is closing in on an improved contract worth £65,000-a-week.

He still has nearly two years of his current deal left to run.

Eriksen arrived at White Hart Lane from Ajax for £11.5million in 2013 and has scored 30 goals in all competitions.

He has been in negotiations with Spurs for several weeks and has already knocked back one of their offers.

Eriksen has been a little subdued this season and has been subbed in two of his three appearances.

But boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed: "It is very close. The information from the club is he is very close.

"Maybe this is a difficult period for him but he is a player with real commitment to the club.

"Sometimes maybe your performance is not the performance you expect.

"But all the players have different performances during the competition and we are very happy with him. He is a great player and very important for us."

Pochettino also claimed that he wants to add another player to his squad in the mould of Sadio Mane before the window shuts.

He added: "We need a player that is more direct, a player that is more aggressive and offensive.

"We have players like Eriksen or Son Heung-min or Erik Lamela that like to play into feet.

"Some characteristics like that we see from Liverpool. Mane, this type of player that can be offensive.";
