Tottenham 1 Liverpool 1: James Milner penalty and Danny Rose strike sees Spurs and Reds share points at White Hart Lane
Sadio Mane had another goal ruled out for offside, while Erik Lamela went unpunished for clawing at the face of Dejan Lovren
TOTTENHAM and Liverpool battled to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining game at White Hart Lane.
James Milner opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Danny Rose equalised for the home side to share the points.
Liverpool were the better side throughout and had a deserved openere just before half-time, Erik Lamela bringing down Roberto Firmino.
Lamela was lucky to still be on the pitch after his claw at the face of Reds centre-back Dejan Lovren went unseen and unpunished.
Liverpool thought they had put the game out of sight when Sadio Mane had the ball in the net early in the second-half, but his strike was ruled out for offside - he looked to be on.
Jurgen Klopp's side failed to find a crucial second goal and left-back Danny Rose, excellent throughout, found a late equaliser - he squeezed home a tight cross from Eric Dier as the sides shared the points.
FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS
- MICHEL VORM really is a quality replacement for Hugo Lloris. His incredible stop from Philippe Coutinho’s shot right on his goal-line was world class and prevented Liverpool from getting an early upper hand.
- HARRY KANE just needs a goal to get things going again. He still is on 49 goals but his all-round play – with and without the ball – was up to his usual standard. Once he gets on, you would bet on him being among the golden boot runners this season.
- IT all seems to be a bit pally with referee Robert Madley. On the team-sheets, the whistler was listed as Mr B Madley as in Bobby! A bit casual, isn’t it? Mind you, so what his performance. More “Two Bob”!
RELATED STORIES
- “Bobby” seemed to bottle it when Vincent Janssen took a tumble under the challenge of Joel Matip. If it was not a penalty, why did he not book the midfield ace? Also why did he continually let Sadio Mane off the hook when he twice clattered into Danny Rose while on a second booking? Answers on postcard, please?
- WHEN Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp get together, I cannot think of two more animated managers. They seem to love the stage of their technical areas. It was almost as exciting to watch as the blood and thunder football on display.
- LIVERPOOL are a bipolar team. We’ve seen the good of their win at Arsenal and their shocker of a defeat to Burnley. At White Hart Lane... they were both. They were on it and looked likely to get a second but then got pegged back.
- CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN left his goalscoring boots at home. On a couple of occasions he was left frustrated but he surely should have hit the target from 16 yards rather than firing woefully over the bar.
- LIVERPOOL were denied a second by a linesman’s error. Mane swept the ball in from close range after a flowing move – but was wrongly adjudged to be offside. TV replays showed he was on.
- TOBY ALDERWEIRELD must be wondering what he had to do to score but found Simon Mignolet in inspired form. Three times he had firm headers kept out by the Liverpool keeper.
- DANNY ROSE kept his composure nicely to bury home inside Simon Mignolet’s near post after Erik Lamela headed on Eric Dier’s cross for Tottenham’s leveller. The goal had been coming.

WHAT THEY SAID
"When you can win at Tottenham, then you should win at Tottenham. But we played really well against a strong side," said Jurgen Klopp, clearly frustrated with the referee.
"If we'd had one or two decision's from a neutral person, then we'd be talking about something completely different (the result).
"I shouldn't be satisfied. I could stand here with nine points but I have four."
Mauricio Pochettino said that he was happy although Spurs were not at their best.
"I'm happy with the performance, maybe they deserved more.
"When you play against Liverpool it is always very difficult, they have very good players."
