Bastian Schweinsteiger transfer news: Jose Mourinho hits back at Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge over Manchester United criticism

JOSE MOURINHO has goaded Bayern Munich over Bastian Schweinsteiger - joking he is surprised Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is not on his doorstep to bring the German back.

The Bayern chief hit out at United over their treatment of the World Cup winner, who has been relegated to the reserves after being told he is not wanted at Old Trafford.

But Mourinho has spoken out about the situation - assuring the 33-year-old it will be "very difficult" for him to get game time with the Red Devils, but "not impossible."

The Portuguese said: "I thought after I read some quotes from people at Bayern Munich, they would run to Manchester to bring him back, but no, that didn't happen. I'm surprised that Mr Rummenigge isn't here now to take him back.

"It's his life. It's his career. He has a contract with Man United and has decided to stay. That's not a problem for us. Football is made of decisions.

"Bastian is not speaking a lot. He gave his last statement which he is completely free to do it in an objective and polite way like he did. No problems at all."

Rummenigge said he could hardly believe what was going on with ex-Munich stalwart Schweinsteiger - and his brother Tobias also works for Bayern as an Under-17s coach.

The German giants' CEO said earlier this month: "I could hardly believe it. One or two players are going to think long and hard in future about whether they want to go to such a club.

"Nothing like that has ever happened at Bayern Munich."

Mourinho added: "I have Pogba, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Carrick. That's five players for two positions.

";I have 23 players ion the squad and in principle nobody is leaving.

"23 players is more than enough and if we have any kind of problem or any kind of opportunity, I have a few young players in the academy that I will be more than happy to accelerate their process and bring them up now.

"So I think we will have a very quiet week. I am more than happy with the squad I have."
