Doctors must now decide whether the Italian needs an operation.
The news is a bitter pill to swallow for Sunderland boss David Moyes, who is desperately trying to recruit defenders to bolster his backline.

Moyes said "It is a serious one and we will assess what to do.

"We will have to bring a keeper in but we are working in other areas too."

Moyes must now turn to England Under 21 keeper Jordan Pickford for this weekend's trip to Southampton while he will aim to bring in an emergency keeper before next week's transfer deadline.
