Rio Olympics 2016: Arsenal starlet Serge Gnabry attracts Bundesliga bid after Germany goal haul

ARSENAL starlet Serge Gnabry is being chased by Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin after his goal-scoring heroics for Germany at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The Gunners ace has hit six goals in Brazil, with braces coming in the 3-3 draw with South Korea and the 10-0 demolition of Fiji which has sparked serious interest in the 21-year-old who has so far failed to become a regular in Arsene Wenger’s Premier League side.

Despite making his Premier League debut back in 2012, the Stuttgart-born attacker has made just 10 top-flight appearances for the Emirates side.

Even more disappointing was the calamitous loan spell at West Brom last season when he joined the second half of the season – with plenty of crucial games remaining – only to play 12 substitute minutes.

Tony Pulis had no interest in giving the prospect more playing time to aid his development as he felt he was well below his standard.

Pulis said: “Serge has come here to play games but he just hasn’t been for me, at the moment, at that level to play the games.

“He’s come from academy football and not played much league football.

“Does academy football really prepare players for league football? And we're talking about Premier League football here.

“As a manager you pick a team that’s going to win a game of football."

But, for the Germany -23 side competing in Rio, Gnabry has found his ruthless streak, sparking the Hertha boss into transfer action.

Manager Pal Dardai said: "Serge is a prototype of the player profile that we need. Let's see what the next few days bring.”

Hertha, however, are not one of Germany’s wealthiest clubs and are hoping for a loan deal as they expect Arsenal to price them out of a permanent switch while he still has a year left on his contract.

The Germany club hopes to land him on a temporary deal while his contract runs down and they can then snap him up on a free.
