Carabao Cup round-up: QPR KO Everton in thrilling shootout as Leeds & Saints win on pens and Brentford go goal-mad

THE third round of the Carabao Cup did not disappoint, with goals flying in up and down the country.

Championship sides Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers pulled off the shocks of round three so far, beating Watford and Rafa Benitez's Everton respectively.

Charlie Austin's brace was enough to take Everton to penalties, where QPR beat the Toffees 8-7.

Leeds escaped a penalty shootout scare against Championship side Fulham, with Illan Meslier saving the day.

Brentford impressively hit Oldham Athletic for seven, with forward Marcus Forss scoring four.

Jay Rodriguez and Maxwel Cornet turned on the style for Burnley.

The Englishman bagged four second half goals to seal a win for the Clarets against Rochdale.

And Manchester City and Liverpool got through their Carabao Cup third round ties comfortably against Wycombe and Norwich respectively.

Watford 1 Stoke City 3

Ashley Fletcher's second half strike cancelled out Nick Powell's opener.

But Stoke shocked the Prem outfit with a second half flurry as Sam Clucas and Josh Tymon scored late on to win the visitors the tie.

Despite Marcelo Bielsa's attacking style of play, Leeds failed to beat Fulham inside 90 minutes.

Wigan Athletic 0 Sunderland 2

Sunderland won the battle of the League One clubs.

Goals from Nathan Broadhead and Luke O'Nien sealed the win for the Black Cats.

Burnley 4 Rochdale 1

Rodriguez scored four in the second half to cancel out Rochdale's Jake Beesley's strike.

Preston 3 Cheltenham 1

Championship side Preston beat League One side Cheltenham.

Goals by Andrew Hughes, Joe Rafferty and San Maguire were enough to hold off the visitors' second half surge.

Sheffield United 2 Southampton 2 (pens: 2-4)

Championship side Sheffield United held Premier League outfit Southampton to a draw inside 90 minutes.

But the penalty shootout ended 2-4 in the Saints' favour with captain Oriol Romeu scoring the winning penalty.

Brentford 7 Olham Athletic 0

Ivan Toney's understudy Forss scored FOUR in Brentford's 7-0 demolition of Oldham Atheltic.

Summer signing Yoane Wissa bagged a brace for the Bees, and Raphael Diarra unfortuantely scored an own goal for the visitors.

QPR 2 Everton 2 (pens: 8-7)

Austin is back scoring for QPR, scoring twice against fancied Everton.

Lucas Digne and Andros Townsend got the equalisers.

QPR won the lengthy penalty shootout 8-7 to knockout Benitez's Premier League side.

Man City 6 Wycombe 1

First-team stars De Bruyne, Mahrez, Foden and Torres got on the scoresheet, cancelling out Hanlan's shock opener. 

And youth star Palmer got himself a goal.

The cup holders are into the fourth round as they look to win the trophy for the fifth year in a row.

Norwich 0 Liverpool 3

Liverpool last won the League Cup back in 2012 when the likes of Curtis Jones were still in primary school.

Two goals by Minamino and one from Origi takes them one step closer as the Reds book place in the fourth round of the competition.

Six more third round ties take place on Wednesday, the most notable being the game between Manchester United and West Ham.

The Hammers will be looking to exact revenge for last weekend's 2-1 loss to the Red Devils, which saw club captain Mark Noble miss a penalty in added time.

Elsewhere, Brighton take on Swansea, Millwall welcome Leicester City to The Den, Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo goes back to Molineux to face old club Wolves, Arsenal take on AFC Wimbledon at the Emirates and Chelsea play Aston Villa.
