Antonio Conte salutes Diego Costa’s passion – but insists his Chelsea striker must still improve
Blues boss loves the Spain star's win-at-all-costs attitude but wants to see big steps forward from the 'fantastic finisher'
ANTONIO CONTE wants Diego Costa to keep showing his passion on the pitch — but is demanding an improvement.
The Spaniard now looks certain to remain at Chelsea this season despite interest from former club Atletico Madrid.
He has scored 36 goals in his two seasons in England but his form was patchy last term and he failed to earn a place in Spain’s Euro2016 squad.
Costa, 27, will lead the line against West Ham tonight with Blues boss Conte saying: “He always shows a great passion. I am the same.
“He doesn’t want to lose and I like this. I think it is important to have this passion for your work, for football. It helps you to overcome difficulties. I demand this from him.
“Diego Costa is a great player and I know that he is a fantastic finisher.
“I think that Diego can improve still a lot.
“I try to improve all my players. The past is not important for me. Now I’m seeing a good attitude from Diego to work and improve in different situations.
“He can give a lot to this team. I’m sure he will have a good season.
“He played a fantastic season when Chelsea won the title. Last season he didn’t score and then he started to score later on.
“But I’m happy he stayed here to work with us. I like the spirit of Diego. I want the right attitude and commitment. I am sure about this.”
