And Goodison gaffer Koeman is also close to sealing deals that will take Yannick Bolasie and Lamine Kone to Merseyside next week.

The Blues have reached agreement on a £25m fee for Crystal Palace winger Bolasie, while defender Kone will move from Sunderland for £18m.

Koeman has wasted no time spending the initial £47.5m Everton banked from selling Stones to Manchester City.

The Dutchman had one bid knocked back for Williams, 31, but got his man with a slightly improved offer.

Bolasie, 27, should finalise his move north once personal terms and a medical have been assessed.

Kone, also 27, will become the second centre-back heading to Goodison within days.

But Koeman must wait before he can consider a new partnership at the heart of his defence as Kone’s transfer is unlikely to go through before next week.

Williams revealed he joined Everton because he could not turn down the chance to work with former defender Koeman.

After agreeing a three-year deal, the Wales skipper said: “I look forward to seeing what the manager’s plans are for me and the team.

“He is one of the greatest centre-halves ever to play the game.

“He’s an unbelievable manager — a world legend in football.”
