United and their fans had been forced to wait a year to see the Dutch hitman in action after his move from PSV was delayed due to a cruciate ligament injury.
So when he was finally ready to pull on the United shirt, expectation weighed heavily on the £19m striker.
He followed up a strike in the Charity Shield by notching a brace against Fulham on his top flight bow. Van Nistelrooy continued that form by finishing his first year at the club with 36 goals.

Not many had heard of the gangly Costa Rican when he arrived at the Rams in 1997 a day prior to the clash with United.
24 hours later, and he had football fans around the country talking about him.
After picking up the ball in his own half, Wanchope embarked on a mazy 60-yard run through the opposition’s midfield and defence before slotting the ball past Peter Schmeichel to help his side to a 3-2 win at Old Trafford.
Went on to enjoy a respectable top-flight career in England with spells at West Ham and Manchester City.
