Man City 2 Preston 0: Watch Riyad Mahrez score stunning free-kick as Pep’s side cruise to pre-season win

RIYAD MAHREZ picked up where he left off last season by firing in a stunning first-half free-kick.

The Algerian was outstanding as Manchester City won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final.

And the £60million signing showed there is plenty more to come with a trademark set-piece in their opening pre-season friendly.

Pep Guardiola named a stronger side than many expected – including four first-team players who only returned to training on Monday.

Ruben Dias, Zack Steffen, Joao Cancelo and Nathan Ake might have expected the night off – but were quickly pressed into action.

Fernandinho, Benjamin Mendy and Mahrez have only been around for just over a week with the City boss giving many of his players a few extra days off.

With Harry Kane not signed – yet – and Sergio Aguero gone, it was youngster Ben Knight who played down the middle.

He had a one-on-one after nice work from Iker Pozo but Preston keeper Connor Ripley got down to save.

Midway through the first half, City did take the lead as Cole Palmer was fouled on the edge of the box.

Mahrez wanted it and curled a beauty over the wall and into the top corner.

He almost created a second as he linked up with Mendy to tee up an opportunity for Palmer but he could find the target.

Guardiola made 10 changes at the break – with keeper Steffen the only survivor.

And it was two youngsters who combined for the stylish second just after the hour – with James McAtee playing in Sam Edozie to score.

Sub goalkeeper Ciaran Slicker had replaced Steffen but had to be stretchered off soon afterwards after a heavy collision.
