And that sealed a 5-4 shootout victory for Switzerland to send favourites France crashing out of Euro 2020.

Mbappe - who did not score at the tournament - took to Instagram on Monday night to say sorry to the millions watching on at home in an emotional and heartfelt post.

He wrote: "Very difficult to turn the page.

"The sadness is immense after this elimination, we could not reach our goal.

"I'm sorry for this penalty. I wanted to help the team but failed.

"Getting to sleep will be difficult but unfortunately it is the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.

"I know you fans have been disappointed, but I still want to thank you for your support and for always believing in us.

"The most important thing will be to get up even stronger for the next upcoming deadlines. Congratulations and good luck to Switzerland."

Hugo Lloris saved a Swiss penalty during normal time but was unable to prevent Vladimir Petkovic's side tucking away all five efforts in the shootout.

But the French goalkeeper and captain was quick to ensure the blame was not pinned on the £162million Paris Saint-Germain forward who was visibly gutted as Sommer delivered the goods.

Lloris said: "We win together, we lose together.

"We are all responsible for being eliminated at this stage of the competition.

"There is no pointing fingers. We had to deal with injuries, but we have no right to make excuses."

Raphael Varane also came out in support of his team-mate.

The Real Madrid defender added: "It's hugely disappointing. We completely messed up our first half. We reacted in the second half but then left them space and they came back.

"Penalties are a lottery. We could have scored in extra time as we had the chances to do that. It will be calm in the dressing room and we'll focus on our next objectives."

France trailed at half-time thanks to Haris Seferovic's header and it could have been worse soon after the break when Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up but saw his penalty saved.

Then Karim Benzema turned the game on its head with two goals in two minutes just before the hour mark - the first a well-taken clip before heading in from barely a yard out.

Paul Pogba's stunning effort into the top corner appeared to make it game, set and match for France.

But the Swiss hit back twice in the last ten minutes through Seferovic's second header and then Mario Gavranovic's fine finish as the clock struck 90 to take the game into extra time.
