SERGIO AGUERO scored late against Borussia Dortmund but Angus Gunn was the real hero as he saved THREE penalties as Pep Guardiola grabbed his first win as Manchester City chief.

The Premier League side had failed to hit top gear against the German giants, that was until Aguero slotted home the simplest goal of his career from five yards out.

Earlier in the game, keeper Willy Caballero had come into criticism for his shaky play between the sticks - particularly with the ball at his feet - while both sides failed to take their chances.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfried Bony both spurned good chances to score earlier in the game, but as it has been so often in the past, it was up to that man Aguero to bail out the Etihad side.

But City were left to rue those earlier missed chances as Dortmund netted with the final kick of the game - in the 95th minute - from a corner.

But Gunn took over, saving an incredible trio of penalties as City eventually triumphed in China, despite a pair of misses themselves, one from the boot of Raheem Sterling.

FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS

  • THE referee was FuMing throughout the game. Literally. The official's name was Fu Ming.
  • GUARDIOLA wasn't kidding when he said his players need to be willing to be versatile. Aleks Kolarov was once again at centre back.
  • KEEPER Willy Caballero got a flea in his ear several times off Pep Guardiola for going long when under no pressure.
  • FERNANDINHO is going to be a big player under Guardiola. The midfielder was picked out for special praise by the boss yesterday - and he was the skipper for this game.
  • THE ICC China has been pretty disastrous from start to finish. The stadium was less than half full here partly due to the high price of tickets. The gate was eventually given as just over 32,000.
  • THE pitch was deemed unacceptable as the game on Monday - this one was playable - but it was hardy conducive to good football.

  • SUPERSTAR pair Sergio Aguero and David Silva got their first run out under Guardiola - he will relish getting his hands on those two.
  • NOT surprisingly it was these two teamed up to score the opener - with the Argentine tapping in from his pal's unselfish work.
  • KELECHI IHEANACHO wasted a couple of golden chances - amid reports in Africa he is one of the players banished to 'fat camp' by Guardiola for being overweight.
  • SAMIR NASRI must be starting to fear the writing is on the wall for him. He has been training but has yet to feature. Maybe he was another told to go through fat camp.
  • THE same can be said of Wilfried Bony - he fluffed a series of chances and you can't really see him being a Guardiola type player. He was subbed despite being a sub.
  • The 88 strong Shenzhen branch of the City supporters club did themselves proud with their banner. Having had a sneak preview of the one Dortmund had, they made a bigger one and it was a close run contest.

WHAT PEP SAID

"In football the season starts when the last one finishes. You don’t have time to rest. We’re going to kill our players.

"We can give them two or three weeks but the schedule is the schedule. We start in two weeks.
We try to organise. We trained really well in Manchester.

"OK we will play two more friendlies before Sunderland and we’ll see how the condition of the players is and we’re going to decide.

"We saw in Munich and here as well what I want to see – we were aggressive without the ball.

"The next game is in Manchester against a Scottish team. After, we go to Copenhagen to play Arsenal.

"The pre-season is pre-season. I don’t like to complain. I would like to have more time from the beginning. I would like to have more friendly games.

"Competitions finish so late and start again so early so we have to adapt. We have to travel in China, the United States and Australia. We have to adapt. It is what it is.

"We’ll adjust and do it. Today we played one of the best teams in Europe by far. They are so strong, that’s why I’m so happy how we did.

"There are many things to improve. I have said that the beginning will be tough, so to create something new you need time.

"Of course we have the Champions League, the most important game for our season. I know we’re going to play not with the level I want in Feb, March and April but it is what it is."
