Sam Allardyce appoints Sammy Lee as assistant England manager with Paul Clement coach
Three Lions boss quick to get his backroom team in place after FA agree compensation with Sunderland
SAMMY LEE will be named assistant England manager as Sam Allardyce puts his own backroom team in place.
Former Liverpool star Lee, who worked with Allardyce at Bolton, left his role at Southampton last month and will work closely with Allardyce in the Three Lions set-up.
Allardyce will be announced as boss this afternoon, and he has also been quick to make Bayern Munich coach Paul Clement a part-time England coach as he brings in his own staff to the England team.
The 61-year-old is expected to be named as England boss today after the FA reached agreement with Sunderland over his compensation package.
Lee had been part of the coaching team at Southampton under Ronald Koeman, but was unable to follow the Dutchman to Everton given his previous connections with Liverpool.
He was an outstanding midfielder at Anfield before embarking on a lengthy coaching career over two spells with the club that resulted in him working as assistant to Rafael Benitez at Liverpool.
The FA were quick to spot his potential, and drafted him in to help with the under 21-s under Howard Wilkinson during the 2000 European Championship in Slovakia.
His talents were then spotted by Sven Goran Eriksson, who brought him into the England senior set-up as coach up until his departure in 2006.
Allardyce had drafted him in as his coach at Bolton when Phil Brown left his side in 2005, and Lee eventually took over as manager in 2007.
He attempted to turn around the playing style at the Reebok Stadium, but with little money made available his efforts failed and he was sacked after just 11 matches in the hot seat.
Since then he has returned to the coaching role where he is better suited, and his work at Southampton has been well regarded throughout football.
Clement has a similar reputation, having worked with Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea and Real Madrid before an ill-fated spell as manager of Derby last season.
Ancelotti was quick to call him back into his coaching team at Bayern Munich over the summer - and he has given clearance for Clement to work with England on a part-time basis.
Lee replaces Ray Lewington as assistant manager, while Gary Neville's role is the one being taken by Clement.
