Spain, who were two-time defending champions, lost to Italy in the first knockout round in France this summer.

The ex-Real Madrid coach won the European Championships in 2012 and beat Holland in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.

Lopetegui, 49, has been a free agent since he was sacked by the Portuguese giants in January.

He was axed after going just three games without victory, including a loss to title rivals Sporting Lisbon.

The former goalkeeper once managed Spain at all youth levels between 2010 and 2014 and was linked with a move to the Championship to replace Kenny Jacket at Wolves earlier this month.

Lopetegui will bid to guide Spain through a tough 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, in a group that also includes the Italians.

His first official game is set to be a home clash with Liechtenstein in the Group G opener on September 5.
