A lorry driver ploughed into a crowd of thousands watching fireworks in the Nice Port area before opening fire on civilians.

And in a summer that has seen France host Euro 2016, with the Tour de France currently rolling through the southern regions, the country's sporting crowd have reacted with horror.

Marine Lloris, the wife of French captain Hugo Lloris, who like her husband hails from Nice, said on Twitter: "My city is attacked. The total horror. Atrocious. We are devastated. #nice #france."

Moussa Sissoko tweeted: "What will stop this one day...? Support and brotherhood in the #ForceofFamilies #Nice06"

Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin's fiance Camille Sold posted her sorrow on Instagram.

She said: "My heart is heavy this morning. To all the children, parents, grandparents, siblings families and friends present last night in Nice.

"To all these wasted lives. After this month of happy interlude the nightmare begins."
