Yakabu comeback: former Premier League star compared to Rolls Royce after game for non-league Boreham Wood

Nigeria hero was compared to a Rolls Royce by non-league boss who claimed he was set for a Football League deal

PREMIER LEAGUE veteran Yakubu is still cruising around in top gear - even down the backstreets of Boreham Wood.

The former Middlesbrough and Everton striker turned out for the Conference side in a friendly against Reading at the weekend and was compared to a luxury motor.

Despite suffering a 4-0 defeat, the ex-Everton man was likened to a Rolls Royce by manager Luke Garrard who admits he has little chance of signing the Nigeria icon.

Garrard said: “He's like a Rolls Royce, especially at this level. When he lands on the ball he's phenomenal.

“Is he as sharp as he used to be in the Premier League? No, but at 33 he could definitely do a job in the League."

"I can imagine he's got interest especially after he'd been with us and played against Reading.

"So I can imagine something will happen in the next week or so but until then we'll enjoy his company.

"It's a long shot (signing him for Boreham Wood).

"I spoke to him on Sunday and he was very open in terms of a few bits that are going on but I've heard a little rumour someone in the League has put an offer to him so it will be very interesting to see how that pans out."

The 33-year-old lives close to the non-league side and has been training with the club to keep sharp after leaving Turkish top-flight club Kayserispor.

The Yak scored more than 140 goals in his career for clubs also including Middlesbrough and Blackburn.
