And claim club representatives held two rounds of talks with dad and agent Jurgen.

Mauricio Pochettino is trying to add more firepower as he bids to build on last season's failed title charge.

And he sees the World Cup winner as an ideal fit with Gotze, 24, able to play anywhere off the striker or up front if necessary.

But Dortmund are keen to bring their former star back after he became the first man to join the flow of talet to rivals Bayern in 2013.

Gotze himself is keen for first-team football after failing to establish himself in Munich under Pep Guardiola, even though Carlo Ancelotti has now taken the reins.

Liverpool could also enter the race having already splashed out £30m on Southampton flier Sadio Mane.
But Spurs appear to be in pole position with Dortmund playing down talk of a return.

With Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving to Manchester United, the Germans are in the market for an attacking midfielder.

Since Gotze, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels have made the same switch to Bavaria and the smaller club would be keen to reverse the trend.

Asked generally about signing players, CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “It is clear we will do something.”

But when quizzed on Gotze, he added: “Until there is a new development, we do not deal with this issue.”
