Pepe gives Portugal a fright ahead of Euro 2016 semi-final, training alone due to muscle fatigue
Wales could receive massive boost in biggest game in history as Real Madrid defender struggles to recover from injury
PORTUGAL have been given a huge scare ahead of their semi-final showdown against Wales — with serious question marks over the fitness of star defender Pepe.
The Real Madrid man has been imperious at the back so far for Fernando Santos’ men.
But he missed training yesterday and has been forced to warm up alone the day before the game in Lyon.
Should Pepe be unavailable for the last-four clash, it would be a major blow to Portugal’s chances to end the Welsh dream.
The problem appears to be muscle fatigue, which is not unsurprising given the defender’s arduous season.
He was part of a Real Madrid team which fought right to the final day of the season for the Spanish title and won the Champions League after a tense penalty shoot-out against neighbours, Atletico.
The clash with Wales would be Pepe’s 41st appearance of the season.
He appeared to hint at a possible issue following Portugal’s Extra Time victory over Croatia.
Speaking at the time, he said: “Each victory comes with a price. We have worked hard and with little rest.
“We gave everything and fought until the end.”
Pepe has been rock solid at the back alongside Jose Fonte.
As a club team-mate of Gareth Bale, he could be important in trying to nullify Wales’ main threat.
