Jose Mourinho says he wants Premier League title success in first year at Manchester United
Mourinho lays down marker as he demands success playing with style at Old Trafford
JOSE MOURINHO says he wants to win the Premier League title in his first year at Manchester United.
Mourinho was unveiled as United boss at Old Trafford for the first time today and wasted no time laying down a marker for his players and the club's supporters.
And he also set about re-igniting his old feud with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has he showed his has lost none of his bite.
The former Chelsea boss says he is not interested in making slow progress improving a side who finished fifth in the league last season.
Instead he is aiming high by targeting the Premier League and satisfying the fans' hunger for watching an attacking brand of football.
Mourinho said: "I was never very good playing with words or hiding behind words or philosophies.
"In fact I never tried to be good, I was much more aggressive in my approach with the risks that can bring.
"It would be easy, even honest, to focus on the last three years and the fact we don’t qualify for the Champions League and so on, and be quite pragmatic to say let’s work and try to be back in top four, try to do well.
"I am not good at that, I prefer to be more aggressive – and that is to say we want to win.
"We want to win, I can anticipate you can come with a question about style of play, from what was before.
"You can win a short competition, you can win a couple of matches without playing well. But you cannot win competitions without playing well.
"That is scoring more goals than the opponent, conceding less and making your fans proud because you give everything and you win.
"I want everything, I want to win matches, playing well, playing young players.
"I want the fans to be behind us because we need them in the last ten minutes. Of course we are not going to get everything. But we want to."
Mourinho met the media for the first time at Old Trafford since being appointed as United boss on a three-year deal on May 27.
The former Chelsea boss began work at United's training ground yesterday as the squad reported back for pre-season training.
He will then take the club on a tour of the Far East, where he faces Borussia Dortmund in his first pre-season friendly in Shanghai on July 22.
Mourinho will also come up against old foe Pep Guardiola in the build-up to the new season when United and Manchester City clash in Beijing on July 25.
By that time he is likely to have a new-look squad at his disposal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly already signed and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also expected to complete a move to Old Trafford.
