England have been ridiculed for their woeful performance at the Euros after crashing out in humiliating fashion to minnows Iceland.

And Bernstein claims there is a “massive problem” at the heart of English football.

Bernstein wants a radical shake-up at boardroom level and said: “If we don’t address it, whatever manager is appointed will come in with great hope but go out disappointed.

“I am talking about an outmoded structure, not modern enough or independent enough and it frustrates the executives within the FA.

“Over the last 10 or 12 years, this is getting worse, not better.”

Bernstein was replaced by Dyke in 2013. And he says Dyke contributed to the embarrassing last-16 exit by saying Roy Hodgson would only keep his job if England reached the semis.

Bernstein said: “This was done in the middle of a tournament, when the pressure was enormous.

“It was unnecessary and amateurish. Undermining your manager in the middle of the tournament was absolutely unnecessary.”
