ANTOINE GRIEZMANN has become the first Frenchman to score four goals at a major tournament since the 1984 European Championship.
Before souring his reputation as Uefa president, Michel Platini was actually a very good footballer.
One of the best of all time, in fact.
And Platini truly shone 32 years ago when he hit NINE as France were crowned champions — the last time they hosted the Euros.
None of his fellow countrymen had managed to even score four since, until Griezmann scored the fourth in their quarter-final against Iceland at Euro 2016.
The Atletico frontman is now top goal scorer after his opener against Albania and matchwinning double in the last-16 victory over Republic of Ireland.
SunSport looks back at some of those who have tried and failed where Griezmann has succeeded.
1986 World Cup — Michel Platini and Jean Pierre Papin
France's strike pair netted two apiece as they suffered a second consecutive World Cup semi-final defeat to West Germany.
Platini scored in knock-out wins against Italy and Brazil.
While Papin's goals came in a group stage win over Canada third-placed play-off success against Belgium.
Euro 92 — Jean Pierre Papin and Eric Cantona
Papin netted France’s only two goals of the game as they flopped in Sweden.
The French drew 1-1 with the hosts, before drawing 0-0 with England and losing 2-1 to eventual winners, Denmark.
Milan saw enough to make Papin the first £10million player immediately after the tournament.
Euro 96 — Christoph Dugarry and Patrice Loko
Both scored found the back of the net once as the French gave a taste of what to expect when would host the World Cup two years later.
Dugarry scored the winner in a 1-0 victory against Romania, while Loko score in 3-1 success over Bulgaria.
France drew 0-0 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, but their luck was out as Czech Republic prevailed on penalties.
1998 World Cup — Thierry Henry
After two successive absences, France were back, and they again prevailed on home soil — with a little help from a then unknown source.
Stephane Guivarc'h was seen as the talisman but he fired blanks, while hero Zidane netted his only goals of the tournament in the final.
Monaco youngster, Henry, was their main man with three goals.
Euro 2000 — Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet, Sylvain Wiltord
The world champions added a European crown to their growing collection.
Henry was their top scorer with three.
But Wiltord scored a stoppage time equaliser against Italy in the final, before Trezeguet netted the Golden Goal as they finished with two apiece.
World Cup 2002 — Thierry Henry
The worst champions of all time.
France failed to score in Japan and South Korea as Henry was sent off.
The lost 1-0 to Senegal, drew 0-0 with Uruguay and were beaten 2-0 by Denmark.
Euro 2004 — Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry
Zidane scored two late goals to topple England in their opener before adding another in the 3-1 victory over Switzerland.
Henry finished with two in Portugal as France finished the group stage with a perfect record.
The holders were shocked in the first knock-out phase, however, as Greece beat them 1-0.
2006 World Cup — Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane
France were late bloomers in Germany.
Two draws were followed by plucky wins and eliminations of Spain, Brazil and Portugal.
Henry hit the quarter-final winner, while Zidane was the goal scorer in the semi-final success and final defeat — though it would all be overshadowed by his red card.
Euro 2008 — Thierry Henry
It was a disastrous tournament in Austria and Switzerland.
Henry scored their only goal in a 4-1 defeat against Holland.
Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema were also in the 23-man squad as France finished drew 0-0 with Romania and lost 2-0 to Italy.
2010 World Cup — Florent Malouda
Another disaster.
The French players went on strike and Anelka would be banned for life as France crashed to two defeats and a draw.
Malouda scored their only goal in an embarrassing loss against hosts, South Africa.
Euro 2012 — Karim Benzema
The Real Madrid striker was the main front man, but he failed to find the back of the net.
Three men — Samir Nasri, Yohan Cabaye and Jeremy Menez — scored one goal each as France flattered to deceive in Poland and Ukraine.
A 1-1 draw against England was followed by a 2-0 win over Ukraine and 2-0 defeats against Sweden and Spain.
2014 World Cup — Karim Benzema and Olivier Giroud
France's swagger returned in Brazil.
This young, emerging team were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Germany in the last-eight.
Benzema was their top goal scorer with three.
