Steven Gerrard to be offered England coaching role and will be consulted on next Lions boss
FA chiefs to approach former skipper about taking up a role in the England youth setup whilst he completes badges
STEVEN GERRARD has held talks with the FA over a coaching role.
The ex-skipper is seen as having a bright future with England and will be offered a job with young players as he takes his Uefa badges.
FA chief executive Martin Glenn will also ask Gerro who should be the Three Lions’ next full-time boss after Roy Hodgson quit.
SunSport revealed last Wednesday that current senior internationals — including skipper Wayne
Rooney, Joe Hart and James Milner — will be asked for their input on the manager hunt.
Liverpool legend Gerrard will now be part of those conversations.
Gerro, 36, is due back from America in November after his season ends with LA Galaxy — but it could be earlier as it is understood his family have struggled to settle there.
Once here, he is expected to work with Liverpool’s Under-21s.
And getting him coaching at St George’s Park could be the first step to him being involved with the senior England team in the future.
The FA want the new Three Lions boss on a pay-as-you-win contract.
That means an end to an era where Fabio Capello pocketed £6million a year and Hodgson got £3.5m per annum for failure.
Glenn revealed: “To start off it has to be results orientated. Roy’s got a fortune but it’s half the fortune that Fabio got.
“So, to get a really good person and they are earning £4m in a club, you have to be in that zone. You’ve got to pay a market attractive rate but no-one wants to be naive.”
Glenn confirmed that he would prefer an Englishman in charge.
He said: “I would but if you look at it there aren’t many at the top level.”
Gareth Southgate, 45, will target a Champions League club before turning to the England top job.
The Under-21 boss could still be asked to fill in for one match, against Slovakia in September.
