As SunSport reported last August, Manchester United were ready to splash out £240m on a cash offer AND wages for the Brazil superstar under Louis van Gaal.

But now with a last-ditch attempt to tempt Neymar through the back door, United have again been gazumped by a player who has ended up signing a more lucrative deal at his current club instead.

It is a familiar tale for the Old Trafford, who under Ed Woodward have promised to sign the world's best players - or 'Gaalacticos' as they were known under the Dutch manager.

Barcelona meanwhile, have seriously sweated over getting Neymar to sign this latest deal.

The Catalan giants had sent a delegation over to Brazil - where the striker is currently preparing to play in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Raul Sanllehi and Andre Cury were the two negotiators charged by Barcelona with getting this Neymar deal over the line with the player's father Neymar Sr.

They were in constant contact with Nou Camp chief Josep Bartomeu and after a tough start to proceedings finally got the deal in place.

Manchester United have not been the only English club interested in the player.

Back in 2010 SunSport also reported that Santos turned down a £17m bid from Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea, who refused to meet the then 18-year-old's release clause of £30m.

Neymar instead signed a £55,000-a-week deal at Santos and they kept him till he signed for Barcelona in 2013.
