Wayne Rooney: England captain denies former manager Roy Hodgson lost the dressing room ahead of embarrassing Iceland defeat

WAYNE ROONEY has denied reports that former England manager Roy Hodgson lost the dressing room.

Reports had emerged that senior players lost confidence in Hodgson over his team selection and tactics.

The 68-year-old quit after Iceland beat the Three Lions to inflict a humiliating defeat on England at the last-16 stage.

In a statement, Rooney said: "In response to recent media reports, I'd like to say that [suggestions senior players lost faith in manager Roy Hodgson are] completely untrue.

"On behalf of the players, we completely supported the England manager but we understand his reasons for stepping down.

"We had absolute faith in the build-up and throughout the tournament."
