Man Utd vs Wolves LIVE RESULT: Rashford scores last minute deflected winner for Red Devils – latest reaction
MAN UTD have moved up to second in the Premier League with a crucial win over Wolves.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men created little in the match but Marcus Rashford came up trumps in the 93rd minute with a deflected strike into the bottom corner.
THAT'S ALL FROM OLD TRAFFORD
United left it late - just like they always used to.
Marcus Rashford's deflected goal in the third minute of stoppage time handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team a victory they hadn't earned, and floored a spirited Wolves side with a suckerpunch.
Not that the Red Devils will care. Their success lifted them up to second spot in the table, and within striking distance of their old foes, Liverpool, as the Premier League heads towards the new year.
While United didn't play well, they somehow got the job done, and that, so we're told, is the sign of champions. The coming months will tell us if that truly is the case.
There's more action to come tomorrow as Tottenham host Fulham before Newcastle take on the Liverpool. Until then, thanks for reading and goodnight.
NUNO DISPIRITED
Wolves Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo has given his thoughts post-match, stating that his patched-up team deserved better than the late heartbreak they endured.
We had a good attitude and it was a fantastic effort. Sometimes young players have to step in and they did very well. It's tough to take. Football is a cruel game sometimes.
Nuno Espirito SantoFERNANDES FINISHES WITH A FLOURISH
Bruno Fernandes made his Premier League debut on February 1st in a goalless draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese maestro has since proved himself a star, and, ten months on, at the same venue against the same opposition, he contributed another assist to end 2020 in typical style.
ECSTATIC OLE
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heralded his team's ability in fighting until the final seconds in order to grind out a crucial win.
Last season, we didn’t win many points towards the end of the games and we have a tradition for it at this club. Now we’ve won quite a few points towards the end of games, and that’s both a mental aspect and a physical aspect.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer"We didn’t perform as we want to, but we’ve won a game against a very tough side.
"It’s a big step forward if you don’t perform well but still win."
HAPPY NEW YEAR?
Manchester United will end 2020 in second spot, two points behind their rivals, and maybe, just maybe, prepared for a title challenge in the new year.
Can United knock Liverpool off their perch in 2021?
THE ACTION AREAS
United ended up edging the game, and they were also the dominant side when it came to possession and the action areas.
However, the statistics don't tell the story of a game where Wolves were well drilled, energetic and a threat on the break.
MARCUS THE MATCHWINNER
Scorer of the late winner, Marcus Rashford has been speaking to Prime Video at full time.
"It’s probably not the most beautiful goal but we’ll take what we can get and we’ll take the three points.
"Today was a tough game, but we managed to get over the line.
The full-back got cramp a few minutes before so I thought the next time I get the ball, I’m going to go at him, make him turn, and try to make something happen. Thankfully, we got the deflection and it went in.
Marcus Rashford"We’re disappointed we didn’t play as well as we could have, but it’s three points no matter how scrappy they are.
"We can’t look too far ahead. To be looking at the table so early in the season is a bit stupid."
FT: MAN UTD 1-0 WOLVES
United triumph at the death thanks to Marcus Rashford's deflected effort. It's three points they scarcely deserve but they're enough to lift the Red Devils up to second in table, and two points behind leaders Liverpool.
