Southampton target Michael McGovern as back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Fraser Forster

NORTHERN IRELAND hero Michael McGovern is wanted by Southampton after his Euro 2016 heroics.

Free agent McGovern, 32, played a blinder against Germany to make sure that Michael O'Neill's men made the last 16 - and also attracted growing interest.

Saints have made contact with the former Hamilton Accies keeper and have offered him a deal to come as cover for England's Fraser Forster.

The terms are good and tempting McGovern, who would be a replacement for veteran Kelvin Davis who has finally hung up his gloves.

McGovern is waiting to decide as he would like to be a number one rather than a reserve and he is prepared to go to a Championship side for that chance.

Alan Stubbs's Rotherham are looking at McGovern, who started his career at Celtic, and may step in if he does not fancy life on the bench with the Saints.
