Arsenal and Manchester United foiled as Edinson Cavani stays at Paris Saint-Germain

EDINSON CAVANI has ended talk of a move to Arsenal or Manchester United by signing a big-money contract extension with Paris St-Germain, according to reports in Italy.

It was thought the 29-year-old Uruquayan would leave the French champions this summer amid speculation that he was growing frustrated at being forced to play out wide.

Now it seems the striker has been  assured that he can play through the middle following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure.

Sky Italia report that  Cavani has extended his contract until 2020 with a revised salary of £6.25million a year, plus another £1.25m in potential bonuses.

Arsenal and United became keen on a possible £35m deal when news of fall-outs between PSG head coach Laurent Blanc, Ibrahimovic and Cavani surfaced.

In February Cavani’s father was adamant he wanted his son to leave Paris for a team that would use him down the middle.

Arsene Wenger was interested a signing a player that he possible should have captured a few years ago, but missed out.

And insiders say Jose Mourinho would have been happy to see Cavani at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Uruquay signed off in the Copa America with a 3-0 win over Jamaica but Cavani remained goalless.

He took too long over a first half chance and saw his shot saved, and Cavani’s next opportunity went begging when he kicked the legs of defender Jermaine Taylor instead of the ball.

Then Leicester City’s Wes Morgan made a good interception to prevent him following up when Blake saved Matias Vecino’s long-range drive.

Cavani next skimmed the roof of the net before failing with a wayward header.
