MANCHESTER UNITED have been ridiculed for their promotion of new Hollywood blockbuster Independence Day: Resurgence.

The Red Devils uploaded a picture on their official Twitter account mocking up Old Trafford stars as characters of the anticipated sequel.

Captain Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling, Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Juan Mata were all mocked up in the image.

United captioned the picture: "Coming soon… United stars face their toughest clash yet! #IndependenceDay"

But fans were not impressed with the light-hearted advertising, and have called for the Old Trafford club to concentrate more on success on the pitch.

Wayne Rooney was slammed by United supporters in May for appearing in an advert for X-Men Apocalypse.

The striker - currently on international duty with England - made an embarrassing cameo in which he had several lines to voice.

United have now gone three years without winning the league - after claiming 13 Premier League titles since 1993.

Last season's fifth-placed finish proved to be the end for Louis van Gaal and the Dutchman was axed for failing to secure Champions League football at Old Trafford.

And despite an FA Cup triumph, Jose Mourinho has been called in to fix United's problems and lead the club back to glory.
