Euro 2016: Last time Wales scored at a major tournament in 1958, a pint of beer was 7.5p and Harold Macmillan was prime minister

SunSport take you back to the last time Wales scored a major tournament goal, the country was quite different 58 years ago

Gareth Bale's tenth-minute goal was Wales' first at a major tournament for 58 years.

Euro 2016 is the Dragons' first international competition since 1958, when John Charles was the star man — and Brazil boasted an up-and-coming 17 year old named Pele.

The Samba star was, in fact, the last man to score against Wales at a major tournament — while Bale is the first to net for the Dragons since Terry Medwin.

Life was somewhat different 58 years ago, and SunSport looks back at how things have changed.

Harold Macmillan was in his second year as prime minister, succeeding Anthony Eden.

And, whilen 2016, the average price of a pint of beer in this country is £3.60, it was just 7.5p back in 1958.

Britain wasn't without its major tragedies in 1958 as eight Manchester United players died in a plane crash. The Munich Air Disaster claimed the lives on 23 people in all.

While war broke out between Britain and Iceland — over finishing rights. The first Cod War over North Atlantic was in 1958, and resulted in a Scandinavian victory, after they threatened to pull out of NATO.

Nat Lofthouses' goals meant now-League One side Bolton won the FA Cup at Wembley, while Wolves were English champions — finishing five points ahead of Preston.

Totteneham's Danny Blanchflower was named the best player in the country as he won the Football Writers' award.

The summer's World Cup — which included Wales — went to Sweden, and Brazil beat the hosts 5-2 in the final.

France's Juste Fontaine netted a record 13 goals in the tournament, which remains the most by one player.

Real Madrid won the European Cup for a third consecutive season, and their French attacking midfielder Raymond Kopa won the Ballon d'Or.
