Former Kop idol has announced his retirement on Twitter after a 12-year career, claiming he's proud of what he's achieved
FORMER Liverpool legend Daniel Agger has announced his retirement from professional football.
The ex-Reds defender, 31, took to Twitter to call time on his career after just 12 years.
Posting a picture of his former clubs' jerseys, Agger wrote: "Thank you for your support.
"A great experience. It's sad, but it is the right decision to stop [playing football].
"I'm proud of my career.
Agger kicked off his career at Danish side Brondby, spending just one-and-a-half seasons in his native land, before bagging a move to Liverpool in January 2006.
The centre-back was brought to Anfield by then-boss Rafael Benitez to bolster the back line, just months after their famous Champions League win over AC Milan.
Agger then spent eight-and-a-half seasons at the Reds, playing 232 games in all competitions, netting 14 times, including a left-footed 30-yard pile-driver against West Ham in 2006.
Through 175 Premier League appearances, Agger racked up a startlingly good 73 clean sheets, winning an impressive 185 tackles in the process.
At the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, the famously inked Agger - who is also a qualified tattoo artist - moved back to boyhood club Brondby after admitting he could no longer keep up with the pace of the Premier League due to a spate of injuries.
There he played out what transpired to be the last two seasons of his career, playing 43 times and scoring twice.
During his all-too-brief career, Agger earned 71 international caps for Denmark - including many as captain - netting 12 times.
