England coach Ray Lewington REVEALS Roy Hodgson plans in major gaffe ahead of Euro 2016 opener against Russia
Three Lions deputy flashes training details as he returned to the squad's hotel - with Vardy and Kane set to start upfront
COACH Ray Lewington’s bungle revealed England’s Euro 2016 secrets.
Roy Hodgson’s No 2 flashed training details as he returned to the team hotel.
One name not in the notes was Chris Smalling, who ended the session with his knee bandaged.
Lew’s gaffe shows Hodgson is veering towards starting Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy against Russia in Marseilles on Saturday.
Three Lions boss Hodgson will field skipper Wayne Rooney in a deeper midfield role if he is happy with what he sees in training.
The handwritten note clearly showed Kane and Vardy as a front duo, with Marcus Rashford and Daniel Sturridge as the second-choice pairing.
It also had Rooney playing in midfield alongside Dele Alli, with Eric Dier pencilled in as the holder.
Jack Wilshere and James Milner seem to be viewed as the understudy midfield pair on the training ground.
Hodgson also appears to be weighing up whether he should play Raheem Sterling on the left of a 4-3-3 shape, or Everton’s Ross Barkley on the other side.
Danny Rose now seems certain to start at left-back after Ryan Bertrand was again unable to take a full part in training and instead worked on his own.
While Hodgson has three days to finalise his thoughts, the plans for the Group B opener do appear to firming up.
Although the FA said Smalling is expected to train today, any serious injury to the centre-back would be a spanner in the works, with Hodgson having to go with John Stones alongside Gary Cahill.
