United are known to want defensive reinforcements, with Chris Smalling's permanent transfer to Roma set to be completed this summer and Phil Jones' Old Trafford career on the rocks.

Pep Guardiola is also in need of some extra personnel in defence after an injury-stricken year for their back-line ruined their title challenge.

Skriniar has been part of Antonio Conte's impressive defence this season, which is only beaten by Juventus for goals conceded in the league.

According to Tuttosport, United submitted a £58m bid for Skriniar which was matched at a separate occasion by their cross-town rivals.

The bids were reportedly matched by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid too, but he has not adapted to Conte's three-man defence as well as was hoped.

Ed Woodward has an open channel with Inter after selling them Romelu Lukaku for £73million last summer.

Ashley Young followed Lukaku to the San Siro in January, with Alexis Sanchez also arriving on loan.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to want a forward - preferably a winger - as well as a midfielder and a defender this summer.

Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish are well known to be his favourite targets in both positions.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly has also been looked at by United but the Serie A club's chairman Aurelio de Laurentiis is notoriously difficult to negotiate with.
