Liverpool target Danny Drinkwater set for new £80k-a-week Leicester contract ahead of Foxes’ maiden Champions League campaign
England midfielder ready to commit his future to Foxes until 2020 by penning lucrative new deal after title-winning heroics
DANNY DRINKWATER is reportedly ready to commit his future to Leicester despite interest from Liverpool.
The England star has been linked with a move to Anfield this summer after helping the Foxes win their first-ever Premier League trophy.
Drinkwater was one of Leicester’s top performers as Claudio Ranieri’s men romped to the title ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham, attracting strong interest from Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.
The German is believed to be a huge fan of the ex-Manchester United youngster, and has even had stats compiled as he plots a £14million bid.
However, The Mail claims that Drinkwater has no intention of leaving the champions and is set to sign a lucrative new contract instead.
The 26-year-old has already seen a massive pay-rise handed to teammate Jamie Vardy but can now expect his own salary to sky-rocket to £80,000-a-week ahead of Leicester’s maiden Champions League campaign.
Drinkwater’s current deal expires in 2018 but his new contract could keep him at the King Power Stadium until 2020.
Negotiations with Leicester are going well and Liverpool will be forced to look elsewhere as Klopp aims to bounce back from two cup finals defeats this year.
A £20m deal for Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze looks some way off, with the player hoping to get a chance under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.
But a £4.7m move for Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius could be completed this week, leaving Adam Bogdan’s future in doubt.
And Liverpool are also confident of landing young Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell, who has rejected a new contract offer from the Foxes.
The £3m-rated defender has also been linked with Arsenal, but reports claim his heart is set on a move to Merseyside.
