Ryan Giggs is urged to quit Man Utd now Jose Mourinho has finally taken over from Louis Van Gaal
Chris Coleman: 'He would be better off cutting his teeth somewhere else and prove he has what it takes to go back'
RYAN GIGGS has been told to leave Manchester United and prove he can be a top manager.
That is the verdict of Wales boss Chris Coleman, who was a former Dragons team-mate.
Giggs, 42, who has spent 29 years at United as player and assistant, is weighing up his Old Trafford future following the sacking of boss Louis van Gaal.
Jose Mourinho is set to take over.
Cookie said: “Is the Man United job a bit early for him? That’s massive.
“He’s a legend at United, he can be there as long as he likes and it would be hard for him to leave but it might also give him that little bit of a spark.
“He would be better off cutting his teeth somewhere else and prove he has what it takes to then go back to Man United.
“It would be a new challenge and take him out of his comfort zone. He’s never been afraid of a challenge, I know that.
“In the long run, he would have what it takes to be a manager.
“He’s quite quiet but, underneath, there’s a very determined character.
“It could work in his favour coming away from something he’s known for so long because you can get stale.
“It might be the kick start for him.
“Is he the type of person the players will like?
“Yes, definitely. I think he’d be a success."
When Jose Mourinho first moved to Chelsea he retained Steve Clarke, at Inter he worked alongside Beppe Baresi, Franco's big brother and at Real Madrid he installed Madridista Aitor Karanka as assistant manager.
But if Giggs wants to establish himself as a manager now he will surely heed Coleman's advice and agree is the time to leave.
Yet they were never likely to succeed.
The argument was that he could become United's Pep Guardiola – who was raised at Barcelona - steeped in his club’s philosophy as player, coach and manager.
Zinedine Zidane has made similar progress from Galactico to backroom boy to head coach at Real Madrid.
After three years of supposed ‘grooming’ under first David Moyes and then Van Gaal, it seems there will be no Ryan heir.
