It comes as activists across the world have called for justice after American died on Monday after police officer was filmed kneeling on his neck during an arrest.

The footage of the 46-year-old begging for help in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has gone viral and caused widespread outrage both online and on the streets as mass riots broke out in the city on Wednesday night.

Protests have since spread across the nation, including to capital Washington D.C. - causing the White House to be placed on lockdown.

Chauvin, a 44-year-old white man, was arrested and is now facing a third-degree murder charge as well as one for second-degree manslaughter.

Schalke's American midfielder Weston McKennie had already shown his support for his late compatriot by donning a 'Justice For George' armband in his side's 1-0 defeat to Werder Bremen.

And now France U21 star Thuram has expressed his solidarity with the protests across the United States by kneeling after scoring the first of his brace in Mochengladbach's 4-1 over Union Berlin.

His father Lillian has been an anti-racism activist since his playing days at Juventus and Barcelona, and his son's powerful gesture has since been lauded online.

One said: "Great gesture. Rest in peace George Floyd."

Another posted: "Nice to see players paying their tributes, they can really help make change happen."

A third added: "Beautiful I’m glad players are showing support."
