Courtois blasts ‘unjust’ plans to hand Barcelona title if LaLiga is not finished claiming Real Madrid were ‘better’ team

THIBAUT COURTOIS believes it would be an injustice if Barcelona beat Real Madrid to the LaLiga title in the event of the Spanish season not being finished.

Although league bosses are confident of seeing out the campaign, significant fears remain about restarting football during the coronavirus pandemic.

Were LaLiga to be cancelled, it is possible the title would be awarded to Barcelona thanks to their two-point lead over Courtois' Madrid - gifted to them after Los Blancos lost to Real Betis in their final game before football was suspended.

The abandonment of Ligue 1 saw table-toppers Paris Saint-Germain made champions whereas the goalkeeper thinks Real were "better" than their Clasico rivals.

He told : "I am sure we can still be champions.

"It would be a shame if the season was stopped for good. And if it was, I would find it unjust that Barcelona were crowned champions.

"In Barcelona they must find it logical, but I don’t.

"They drew and lost to us, we showed that we were the better team even if they are two points ahead today.

"I wouldn’t find that fair. In England I can understand that Liverpool would be named champions, because they are 25 points ahead.

"Either we play it all or we don't finish, but then we don't designate a champion."

TESTING TIMES

Courtois confirmed that he will be tested for coronavirus this week as part of LaLiga's extensive plans to check returning stars are not carrying the illness.

A gradual return to training is set for this month before matches begin behind closed doors in June - a similar plan to that of the Premier League and Serie A.

Spain is easing its lockdown after over 25,000 confirmed deaths from coronavirus and 250,561 positive tests, with daily increase rates falling.

However Eibar, who sit two points above the relegation zone, this week stated that they are "afraid" and "unsettled" ahead of returning to work.

A squad statement read: "It unsettles us that, for doing what we like most, we could get infected, infect our families and friends and even contribute to a new outbreak of the pandemic, with the terrible consequences that would have for the population."

And Courtois, 27, added his belief that football can only return once it is safe to do so.
