Football league stars fuming at PFA as 25 per cent wage deferral branded a ‘disgrace’

FOOTBALL LEAGUE players are furious with the PFA — after they agreed a proposal with the EFL to defer 25 per cent of wages for April.

The agreement, which was labelled a ‘disgrace’ on Tuesday night, applies to League One and League Two clubs.

Championship teams will make individual decisions — such as Swansea, who agreed a 20 per cent deferral with any player on over £4,000 a week.

Any player in League One or Two earning less than £2,500 a month will still be paid in full.

But one angry League One boss told SunSport: “My players are absolutely furious. It is a disgrace.

“The deferrals are conditional — but some clubs will say the conditions are that the games have to be watched by fans and that will not happen. All the games will be played behind closed doors, so it will be a cut.

“The union needs to be talking to their players first. There has been no communication.

“Some clubs will do anything to avoid paying their players.”

One owner vented his fury at EFL chairman Rick Parry and Co.

He added: “It’s as clear as mud. I do not know why they came up with the 25 per cent figure and then put pressure on the clubs and players.

The EFL and PFA will form a working group of six club captains or PFA delegates from League One and Two, supported by a representative nominated by the PFA.

The statement added: “Dialogue will enable the League both to listen to the concerns of players and to explain the extent of financial challenges.

“It will focus not just on the short term (May and June) but will address the medium-term, from the start of July onwards and into next season.”
