The Red Devils had just swept the Rams aside to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - with Lingard playing the full 90 minutes.

But what should have been a positive night for the England international was marred by the disgusting abuse that he was forced to endure after the match.

Towards the end of a clip that has circulated online, horrible racist language can be heard being shouted at Manchester United's No14.

And according to , United have wasted no time in launching an investigation into the shameful incident.

Derbyshire Police are also appealing for witnesses and information, having begun an investigation of their own.

United will speak to Derby County as they try and gather as much information about what happened as they were leaving Pride Park on Thursday night as possible.

As well as the vile racist taunt, Lingard was forced to endure a torrent of other insults as he simply tried to leave the stadium.

Despite having won the match, one man repeatedly told the 24-cap England international to "f*** off".

The idiot also shouted: "Jesse, you're s***."

Another individual is then heard mocking Lingard for his lack of goals and assists in the Premier League.

The encounter is the latest in a depressing string of incidents in which footballers have had to endure horrific abuse this season.

Back in August Lingard's Man United team-mate Paul Pogba was the subject of sick taunts including death threats after missing a penalty in his side's 1-1 draw with Wolves.

And Marcus Rashford faced a similar barrage of despicable racist social media posts after also missing a spot-kick a week later against Crystal Palace.

A man was arrested by Greater Manchester Police in December after allegedly racially abusing midfielder Fred during United's Manchester derby victory at City.

An understandably fuming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on that occasion: "I've seen it on the video, it was Jesse and Fred and the fella must be ashamed of himself.

"It's unacceptable and I hope he will not be watching any football anymore."

Lingard posted on Twitter after last night's match, calling his team's performance "A good nights work, onto the quarters," before adding: "always nice to see you legend @WayneRooney".

One fan responded: "Enjoy your last few games mate, worst player in our team."

But another swiftly defended Lingard, replying: "Really why? He was good tonight".
