And while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hopeful he would be available for today after the game, the England striker has been unable to recover in time, according to his boss.

Speaking ahead of the game, Solskjaer said: "I wouldn't expect to see him for the next few weeks."

Rashford has started every one of United's games this season but the back problem he has been carrying for "a little while" will now keep him out beyond this week.

He has undergone tests on the issue and Solskjaer faced questions on the results today confirming the bad news.

United face Burnley in the league, the winner of Watford or Tranmere in the FA Cup, Man City in the Carabao Cup, before Prem games with Wolves and Chelsea in their next five outings.

And Solskjaer will want to limit his absence the best he can given United's reliance on the Three Lions star's goals this season.

The Englishman has bagged 14 goals which is nearly double that of his nearest competitor Anthony Martial who has only got eight.

England boss Gareth Southgate will also be sweating on the exact nature of the problem ahead of this summer's Euros but it looks like he should make a recovery before then.

Southgate is already without captain and main goal threat Harry Kane for the foreseeable after he ruptured a hamstring which will keep him out for three months.

And he could now be without Rashford for the upcoming friendlies in March.
