Luka Modric has reportedly held talks with DC United about a potential transfer from Real Madrid

According to , both sides have kept in contact over recent months.

A source said: “He’s discussed it with his family and is excited by the idea.”

Modric is expected to want around £4million per year if he does decide to leave Real Madrid.

Rooney spent two years with DC before returning to England with Championship side Derby, making his debut on January 2.

And now the Eastern Conference franchise are hoping to lure another high-profile star to Audi Field.

Modric would become just the fourth Ballon d’Or winner to play in the MLS after Lothar Mattheus, Hristo Stoichkov and Kaka, who all made the switch years after claiming the prestigious gong.

The Croatian star, however, was crowned the world’s best player in 2018 after winning a third Champions League in a row and helping his country reach the World Cup final.

But just a year after ending the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo duopoly, Modric is fighting for his place in the starting XI at Real.

Modric is out of contract at the end of this season, meaning he could agree a deal to join for free in the summer.

But as he proved with his fourth goal of the season on January 4, he is still a valuable asset on the pitch despite his age.
