In a cruel twist of fate, Depay's team-mate Jeff Reine-Adelaide also suffered the same injury in his right knee.

Depay, Lyon's captain, has been integral this season with nine goals in 12 league starts.

Lyon sporting director Juninho said: "It's a very bad evening because we lost and because of the lack of quality.

"The very bad news is also the injury of Memphis, who could be out for a while.

"He's our captain and I'm sad for him."

A club statement added of both players: "Unfortunately likely to be unavailable for at least six months."

The news will come as a huge blow for Holland with Depay one of their key players.

He scored six goals in Euro 2020 qualifying and boss Ronald Koeman already has a shortage of strikers at his disposal.

Depay had been linked with a move back to the Premier League with Tottenham and Liverpool.

He swapped England for Ligue 1 in 2017 after ending his nightmare two-season spell at Manchester United.
