Leeds keeper Kiko Casilla charged with racially abusing Charlton striker Jonathan Leko

LEEDS GOALKEEPER Kiko Casilla has been charged with racially abusing Charlton forward Jonathan Leko, the FA have confirmed.

It is alleged that the Spanish international used abusive/insulting words towards Leko when the two clubs met on September 28.

This offence breaks Rule E3(1), and Casilla is also alleged to have used words constituting an "Aggravated breach".

This kind of breach is defined by Rule E3(2) as to reference an opponent's race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin.

The 33-year-old has until November 12 to respond to the charge.

The offence could see the ex Real Madrid keeper banned for up to 12 matches.

An appeal is likely, with a statement from Leeds United confirming that Casilla "strenuously denies" the allegation and will work with the FA in their investigation.

Casilla will remain available for selection until he is seen for a personal hearing.

Referee John Brooks heard what was said by Casilla on the day of the match and immediately reported the incident to the FA, who then began their investigation.

Lip readers and Spanish interpreters were used to determine exactly what was said to Leko, 20.

If Casilla is to be given a 12 match ban, he won't feature again until mid-January at the earliest.

The incident comes in a season marred by a series of disgraceful acts of racism.

Last week Bulgaria were hit with a pathetic two-match stadium ban for the disgusting racist abuse suffered by England stars during the Euro 2020 qualifier last month.

The Bulgarian FA were also fined £64,600.

The FA are also investigating an incident at the FA Cup match between Haringey Borough and Yeovil.

Haringey manager Tom Loizou lead his players off after goalkeeper Valery Pajetet suffered racist abuse from Yeovil supporters.

And over the weekend Mario Balotelli walked off the pitch after suffering abuse against Verona.
