Gomes’ ankle buckled and broke during the tackle

Gomes was rushed to hospital for surgery on a fractured and dislocated right ankle after the 78th-minute flashpoint.

His Everton team-mate Cenk Tosun revealed the pain Gomes was in, saying: “I could hear him screaming. His eyes were open so big. I just tried to hold him.”

But it appears the usual cheery and happy Son was the hardest hit after being sent off for his challenge.

He left the field in tears and had to be consoled by boss Mauricio Pochettino.

And it is claimed that once Son got back to the changing room, he just wanted to be left alone.

The Athletic say the 27-year-old switched off his phone until Spurs left Goodison Park to make their way to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

They reference a source who told them it was “distressing” to see Son so upset because he is usually positive but reserved when it comes to expressing his emotions.

He covered his face with his hands when walking through the mixed zone after the game.

Son did not stop for the South Korean journalists there waiting to talk to him.

And it is said that Son went straight to the home he shares with his parents after arriving back at Stansted.
